Update from the Road...

Day 1
"I talked to Scott tonight and he is spending the night in Anton, CO. He said there was a bed and breakfast posted online in that city, but it has since closed, so he was tenting it in a church yard. No stores or restaurants open, so he is dining on snacks and gatorade he had packed. He avoided a lightening storm and tornado warning by asking a lone RV traveler woman if he could sit in her RV with her. She let him after she questioned him up and down and looked at his ID. After this excitement he blew a tire and had to replace it. More excitement that I care to have in a week. He did start his day out with a wonderful breakfast with Rachel Kennedy. He said she was a delight! He sounded like he was ready for a nice sleep in the tent." (...from Mrs. Foreman)

"I made it to Alton, CO 100 mi tornado warnings and hail slowed me down" -- 8:21am 6/15/09 (...text message from Scott)

Day 2
"I talked to Scott a few times today. He started his day off with breakfast from a gas station - chocolate milk and double stuffed Oreo's. He probably had a sugar crash by 9 am. Blew another tire today - 2 for 2. Rode about 120 miles today to make up for some lost time yesterday. He found a cheap motel to sleep in and is thrilled to sleep on a bed with pillows. He used his biker shorts for a pillow last night - visuals anyone??? He said he had a steak dinner tonight at the local cafe called "Cafe". He was in his motel room talking to me when golf ball sized hail appeared out his window and a tornado warning was issued. The storm blew over by the end of our conversation. He couldn't emphasize enough how delighted he was to be in the motel room! He will be in a motel tomorrow night and according to Weather.com should have good riding weather tomorrow. He sends everyone his love." (...from Mrs. Foreman)

"In norton KS half way there livin on a prayer!" -- 12:03pm 6/16/09 (...text message from Scott)

Day 3
"I Called Scott last night and he was in good spirits. He said he pulled into a road side park and was able to swim in the pool for a while. He described the features of the landscape over the last couple days and it sounded as flat as a pool table. He also said that despite the sunblock of SPF40 he was using, he stilled looked like a BBQ'd chicken." (...from Clint Jones)

"Just in at Smith Center 125 mi in 9 hrs staying at the Buckshot Inn" -- 5:27pm 6/16/09 (...text message from Scott)

"Scott said the weather was hot. He stopped at a park through a small town and filled his water bottle at a community park. There was a pool and they let him swim for $1. He stayed int he Buckshot Inn in Smith Center, KS and decided to choose from one of two restaurants across the street because the others were too far away - 8 blocks away." (...from Mrs. Foreman)

Day 4
"Due to strong head winds (20 mph) from the east, high heat (97 degrees) and impending bad weather (several tornado warnings - AGAIN!), Scott cut it short today and is staying in Belleville, Kansas. I believe he said he rode 65 miles today. He sounds like he is tired and the rest might be good for him." (...from Mrs. Foreman)

"Toughest day today 90 degrees w a 10 to 20 mph headwind 55 mi in 5 hrs and another flat in Scandia, KS now" -- 1:27pm 6/17/09 (...text message from Scott)

Day 5
"Scott is staying in Hiawatha, KS tonight. He started his morning early, 6 am, and was in the next big town by 9:30 am to pick up 4 extra bike tubes! Hopefully that should last him the remainder of his trip. He ate at Pizza Hut last night and froze his leftovers for his lunch today - creative guy. He stopped at a park mid-day and took a nap. Scott said that farming is a BIG think in Kansas and for the first time in 3 days he doesn't smell pig crap. The road he planned on taking tomorrow was turned into an interstate for about 6 miles, so he will need to find an alternate route for that 6 mile stretch. He's enjoying everyone's text messages and phone calls. Keep them coming. More later...Janet " (...from Mrs. Foreman)

"Scott biked 140 miles today. He said he is "feeling a little bit too good" and that scares him. He hopes to have an average day tomorrow and go about 100 miles, but if he is feeling good he may go a bit further. He is camping in a nice campground and some year round RVer's invited him over for a great dinner of pasta, fruit and veggies. He said a home cooked meal tasted really good. He seems to be on target for his route and plans on being home sometime next weekend if everything continues to go well. :)" (...from Mrs. Foreman)

Day 7
"Scott made it to Quincy, IL yesterday. He biked over the Miss-i-ss-i-pp-i River (fun to spell) from Missouri to Illinois. He was kind of nervous about it, but said the bridge wasn't too high so he was able to enjoy the ride and not freak out about the height. He started the first 10 miles biking with his RV buddy who had him over for dinner the night before. They supplied him with some fruit and protein bars for his ride. Once across the Mississippi he rode right in to a Best Western for the night, but was disappointed to learn their pool was broken. If the remainder of the trip goes acccordingly, Scott is thinking he might make it to Lansing this Thursday or Friday. I would love to have a group ready to greet him over the finish line (our house), so you are all welcome and keep posted for details. " (...from Mrs. Foreman)

"Scott is in East Peoria, IL tonight. He had to go a bit further than planned because there wasn't a hotel in Peoria, IL. He said the heat is atrocious with a heat index of mid-to high 90's. He was looking forward to the pool. He indulged himself and had a burger and fries for dinner. He had been craving one all week and didn't really have a chance to have one until now.
